This convenience store in China is a cliffhanger, literally!
Unlike the convenience stores around us, this store in China is difficult or rather "inconvenient" to reach. This shop is unusually located and is at a height of 120 meters (393 feet) up the side of a cliff. Yes, you read that right! This store is dubbed as the "most inconvenient convenience store" in China and offers unique experiences to buyers.
The store offers refreshment snacks and drinks
Located in Shiniuzhai National Geographical Park in the Chinese province of Hunan, this two-square-meter wooden shop provides beverages and light refreshments for rock climbers looking for a quick break during their ascent. Potato chips are reportedly the most popular snack. Furthermore, the cost of the items reportedly is not inflated. A bottle of water costs 2 yuan (Rs. 23).
It takes about 90 minutes to reach the shop
The shop is situated along a mountain path that is dotted with metal anchors that climbers can use to secure themselves. According to China Daily, the journey up the cliff to the store takes about 90 minutes. There will be only one staff member inside the store at a time. Reportedly the workers at the store replenish stock daily using ziplines.
Workers are responsible for the supplies
It's the staff's duty to replenish supplies by carrying them in backpacks to the shop every morning before dawn. One of the workers told a Chinese media outlet that the most difficult task is to go to the toilet in between. According to them, it's exhausting to have to climb up and down. So they minimize drinking water.
Instant hit on social media
After a year of construction, the store opened in 2018 and created a lot of hype. It made a comeback and hit headlines again this month capturing the attention of Chinese social media users with fresh stories on state media. Reportedly the hashtag "most inconvenient convenience store" received nearly 50 million views on Weibo, a Chinese microblogging website.
