The safest place to travel in 2024? It's officially Canada!
Canada has been named the safest travel destination in 2024, according to a recent "Safest Places" report by Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection, a US-based travel insurance company. The report evaluates countries using data from the Global Peace Index, the State Department's travel safety ratings, and GeoSure Global scores for major cities. Canada's cold weather and low population density helped it rise from sixth place in 2023 to the top spot this year.
Criteria for safety rankings and Canada's performance
The annual report describes a safe destination as "a place where all types of people can move about freely without discrimination or harassment." Initially focusing on areas free from terrorism, the report now also considers locations safe from disease outbreaks. Canada earned the highest ranking for transportation safety, health measures, low rates of violent crime, and protection of women, LGBTQ+, and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) communities.
Switzerland and Norway follow Canada
Switzerland and Norway trail Canada in the index's yearly ranking. The two destinations have garnered much attention (and footfall) over the past few years, however, they couldn't match Canada's overall safety rankings this annum. The Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection report has gathered data to identify the safest places for travelers, for nine consecutive years.

Things to do: Include these activities in your itinerary
Niagara Falls is indeed a prominent attraction in Canada, offering a breathtaking sight of water cascading from a height of approximately 187 feet above sea level. Travelers also seek the awe-inspiring experience of hunting for the northern lights in Whitehorse, renowned as an optimal location to witness this natural phenomenon. Whereas, Banff offers exhilarating rafting adventures suitable for thrill-seekers of all skill levels, providing an exciting experience amid its scenic surroundings.
Souvenirs: Here's what to shop when in Canada
Shopaholics, unite! If you are looking for some ideal souvenirs to buy in Canada, consider yourself sorted. Maple syrup is the most common and loved souvenir that Canada offers. It is extracted from the xylem sap of the leaves or trees of red maple, black maple, and sugar maple. Additionally, soapstone carvings, deeply entrenched in Canada's history for over 1,000 years, stand as prized items worthy of purchase.
