Traveling to Thailand? Beware of these scams
What's the story
Thailand is one of the most stunning travel destinations in the world and is known for its idyllic beaches, splendid temples, and delicious food.
However, amid the global influx of tourists, many unfortunate visitors fall victim to scams that mar their experience.
To ensure your stay in this 'Land of Smiles' remains joyful, stay vigilant against these common scams in Thailand.
#1
Motorbike renting
Renting a motorbike in Thailand ensures affordable local commutation. However, it also often comes with a scam.
You can be fleeced for damages by the bike companies/owners without you damaging anything. Some may even steal the bikes themselves and accuse you of theft.
Take pictures/videos of the bike as proof of its condition when you rent it. Never submit your passport as a deposit.
#2
Fake money
Fake currency bills headline Thai media every now and then. And as tourists don't have proper knowledge about the country's money system, they are easily duped.
Prevent this by staying aware of the currency notes and exchange rates. Always exchange currency at authorized centers instead of local companies or street vendors offering money at cheaper rates.
Familiarize yourself well with Thai currency before visiting.
#3
Gemstones
If you opt for a tuk-tuk tour in Thailand, you may be taken to various gem stores and be told that the gemstones in the country are inexpensive.
Some may even show you a bogus list of happy customers and claim that the Thai government supports them.
However, don't fall into that trap else you may end up buying random stones disguised as gems.
#4
Tailor scams
In Thailand, many local tailors offer cloth materials that are lowbrow in quality and call them authentic. They sell it by giving one-time deals and offers to lure tourists.
If you are planning to buy tailor-made clothes, make sure you are only going to reliable places and brands.
Don't trust local shops with discounts. Always check the quality of the fabric first.
#5
Bird food
Thailand is one of the many countries witnessing the bird food scam.
On your journey, locals may offer you bird food to feed the birds around. Once you are done feeding and are about to leave, they will ask you for money.
This scam is organized by a group of people disguising themselves as responsible citizens. They may urge you to pay.
