Foods to avoid putting in your children's lunch box
One of the most difficult tasks as a parent is to ensure that your children get enough nutrients for their growth. However, amidst this ongoing struggle, the contents of your kids' lunch boxes are often overlooked. Packing anything available in your kitchen is not the right way to go about it. Instead, consider alternative options to provide them with a nutritious meal.
Instant noodles
Instant noodles are something that is often readily available in our kitchens. However, they contain preservatives and refined flour which offers little to no nutritional value. Adding a few vegetables does not make it better. These are also bad for the intestines for they only provide empty calories which can lead to stomach aches or other digestive ailments.
Fried foods
Fried foods such as French fries, potato chips, and fried chicken nuggets are usually loved by kids. However, overindulging in them is unhealthy. These are rich in harmful fats, which can lead to weight gain and digestive problems. Instead, choose healthier cooking techniques like baking, grilling, or steaming that can be used to make dishes like sweet potato wedges, or baked chicken tenders.
Candies or chocolates
Always say no when your kids ask for chocolates to take to school. Candies and chocolates contain a lot of sugar, offer no nutritional value, and may cause cavities and other oral health issues in later life. The same goes for cakes or donuts that contain artificial colors and trans fat. These can cause heart problems in the long run.
Packaged juices
Do not mistake processed or packaged juices for healthy fruit juices and share them with the kids. Just because the label says 'fruits' does not make it healthy. Similarly, avoid giving energy drinks to kids. These drinks, in fact, contain little fruit extract and are loaded with added sugar. It is better to opt for whole fruits instead.
Salads or sandwiches with mayonnaise
Mayonnaise-heavy salads or sandwiches should not be packed for kids' lunches because they may spoil by the time they are eaten. While mayonnaise provides some amount of creaminess to the food, it is largely unhealthy. Additionally, mayonnaise is high in nitrates and salt and often includes artificial coloring and additives, which are all harmful to children.
