Monsoon car care: Tips for a safe journey through rains
Monsoon means sudden (and torrential) rains and endless gridlocks. And what could go worse is when your car breaks down in the middle of nowhere and you are stuck in the water! Insert: Titanic soundtrack, sounds like a nightmare, doesn't it? Well, here are some tips for car care that can help you avoid such incidents as you drive amidst downpours.
Check the brake system
To ensure that your car doesn't skid during rainfall or doesn't stop moving altogether, its brake system must be functional. Inspect the brake pads to check their thickness. If they are worn out, get them replaced. Also, maintain high brake fluid levels for optimal performance. Top them up if low. Ensure there's no damage or corrosion in the brake lines and rotors.
Replace worn-out wiper blades
If the wipers on your car are leaving smudges or streaks on its window, it is time to replace them. Examine if there is any wear or tear and if there is, buy a new set. You can also use a mild detergent or a glass cleaner to keep your windshield clean. Skip using harsh or abrasive chemicals as they can damage the blades.
Clean the headlights, taillights, and indicators
Another important tip is to inspect your car's headlights and check for any cloudiness, yellowing, or damage. If there is one, clean the headlights' lenses with a mild detergent. For taillights, get them gently polished again if they are cracked, dull, dirty, or filled with moisture. As for the indicators, ensure they are in proper working condition to guarantee functionality.
Ensure the tire's tread depth
Having a sufficient tire tread depth allows your car to remain stable on wet surfaces, helping you prevent skids and slides. To check that, you can buy a tire tread measuring device, which is easily available in the market for as little as Rs. 100. Furthermore, ensure the tires are properly inflated as underinflated tires can lead to hydroplaning.
Don't forget to keep emergency tools and kits
Emergency tools and kits can come in handy any time, especially during the monsoon. Ensure that you have a spare tire or two, a torch, reflective triangles or cones, and a tool kit filled with screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, and tire pressure gauges. In addition to this, do not skip keeping a first aid box in case of an accident.
