Laryngitis: Home remedies that can offer relief
Laryngitis is a fairly common health condition that happens when one's vocal cords become inflamed due to overuse or infection. This leads to a distorted voice, typically one that is hoarse or croaky. Generally, if this condition isn't accompanied by symptoms of an underlying disease, it doesn't require a visit to the doctor. You can easily treat it with some natural and home remedies.
Saltwater gargles
Saltwater is known to kill the harmful bacteria or microbes that lead to laryngitis. It also helps reduce pain, irritation, and discomfort in the throat when you gargle with it. All you have to do is, add half a teaspoon of salt to a glass of lukewarm water and stir well. Gargle in the back of the throat and then spit it out.
Ginger root
Ginger root is loaded with strong anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties that can help reduce inflammation in the larynx. For this, you can either simply brew a cup of ginger tea and sip it hot or add ginger root to warm water and consume it. Note that overuse of this spice can backfire, so make sure you are only practicing this remedy once-twice daily.
Honey
Honey is a natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory product that can soothe your throat and free it from toxins. It can also offer relief from cough and hoarse voice, which makes it an excellent remedy for laryngitis. Simply grab a glass of lukewarm water and add a tablespoon of honey to it. Mix well and sip on it warm. Repeat this twice or thrice daily.
Garlic
If you are down with laryngitis owing to infection, garlic can come to your rescue as it has potent antibacterial, antiseptic, and antibiotic properties that help you regain your normal voice and throat comfort. You can add a reasonable amount of garlic to your meals. If you dislike its taste, you can crush a garlic clove and swallow it with water.
Humidifier
The dry air you breathe can worsen your symptoms of laryngitis, which is why using a humidifier is a good option. A humidifier adds much-needed moisture to the air and relaxes your inflamed vocal cords. Ensure proper device cleaning to prevent additional infections. It's recommended to use a humidifier continuously or for extended periods, especially during sleep, to maintain consistent moisture in the air.
