Paramedics play key role for pregnant women in 108 Ambulances
Ziqitza Healthcare Ltd. believes that transporting pregnant women to an appropriate healthcare facility involves its own challenges and plays a pivotal role in preventing maternal deaths. It is estimated that at least 15% of pregnancies encounter complications and seven percent require referral to a higher level of care. 108 Ambulance services helps in transporting pregnant women routinely to obstetric emergencies in India.
Presence of an EMT during transport can prevent maternal deaths
Dr. Lovejit Singh, Doctor at Ziqitza Healthcare Ltd, remarked, "Most maternal deaths could be prevented if women are assisted by skilled EMT in an ambulance at birth and those experiencing complications could reach quality emergency obstetric care in a timely manner."
How does the 108 Ambulances system operate?
Ziqitza-operated 108 Ambulance systems consist of trained paramedics & skilled EMT. It all starts when 108 receives a call for delivery or other pregnancy-related problem. An ambulance moves to the location with a well-skilled EMT who carefully boards the patient in the ambulance with the use of a stretcher and advises her to take the left lateral position so she can feel comfortable.
EMTs make sure a patient gets complete assistance
A thorough examination of the patient is done by EMT on the way to the hospital. "If the delivery occurs in the ambulance, EMT provides assistance during baby's birth as the patient cannot push. EMT can contact the doctor by calling 108," Dr. Singh said.
What to do after a baby is born?
A newborn baby is covered in amniotic fluid and can easily get cold. Drying the baby and using warm blankets can help prevent heat loss. Some babies have too much fluid in their lungs. Stimulating the baby to cry by stroking the skin brings the fluid up where it can be suctioned from the nose and mouth with the help of a mucus extractor.
Apgar test is done to assess the newborn's condition
After ensuring that the baby is breathing normally EMT helps the patient in the expulsion of the placenta. Health assessments of the new baby start right away. One of the first checks is the Apgar test. The Apgar test is a scoring system to evaluate the condition of the newborn at one minute and five minutes after birth.
They ensure both mother and child are healthy
A brief physical exam is done to check for obvious signs that the baby and mother are healthy and then both of them are shifted to the nearby government hospital for further care. Similar observations were made by the team at Ziqitza Rajasthan.
How Ziqitza deals with the emergency calls?
An EMT plays an important role during the transfer of pregnant women for delivery of baby in an ambulance. Therefore, they play a major role in lowering maternal mortality in India. "We have always made efforts to implement all safety norms both at the call center or ambulance. Patient safety is our key priority while dealing with emergencies," Dr. Santosh Datar said.
