UP: Six AIIMS 25 medical colleges in the works
The Yogi Adityanath government has initiated the process of setting up six new AIIMS and 25 medical colleges in the state. "Once we shortlist areas for setting up these institutions, we will send a proposal to the Centre through the Chief Minister," Minister for Technical and Medical Education Ashutosh Tandon Gopalji said. The institutes are expected to launch in five years.
AIIMS status for King George's Medical University
Last week, Adityanath said King George's Medical University will soon be upgraded to a state university and accorded AIIMS status. It will then be able to affiliate other medical institutes, as well as get specialty departments, better healthcare amenities, more funds for research etc.
The government's plans in education
Tandon said the government is taking care to fill up 500 vacant posts of teachers at the earliest. It is also working on new infrastructure and facilities, including free Wi-Fi and e-libraries. It is also working on holding job fairs in the next few months. Tandon expressed hope that "once quality (of education) is ensured", students will be able to get good jobs.
UP's abysmal education sector
Despite high enrolment in primary school (83.1%), UP faces the problems of low learning outcomes and high school dropouts, with one of the highest absenteeism rates in India, especially for girls. Dismal education in turn pushes up unemployment rates; in 2015-16, 58 out of 1,000 people in UP were unemployed. During 2001-2011, over 5.8mn people between ages 20-29 left UP in search of jobs.
