The Uttar Pradesh government led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has introduced a stringent social media policy, aimed at curbing anti-national content. The Uttar Pradesh Digital Media Policy 2024, approved by the state cabinet, stipulates severe penalties for those found guilty of posting content against the country. These penaltiess can range from three years to life imprisonment. The policy also includes provisions for legal action against agencies or firms that upload "objectionable content."
Policy encourages sharing of government's schemes
The new policy encourages the dissemination of information related to government schemes and achievements. This will be facilitated through advertisements on various social media platforms. The aim is to promote transparency and keep citizens informed about the government's initiatives. The policy was announced following a cabinet meeting, where Uttar Pradesh Minister Sanjay Nishad stated that social media platforms like Instagram will now be regulated and given advertisements.
UP government to pay influencers for promoting its work
The Uttar Pradesh Digital Media Policy 2024 also includes a provision for engaging with social media influencers. Based on their follower and subscriber count, influencers could earn up to ₹8 lakh per month for promoting the government's work. This initiative covers popular platforms like X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, Shorts, Podcast, Facebook, and YouTube. The exact remuneration will depend on the influencer's followers and views.
Maximum monthly payment limits for influencers
The policy sets maximum monthly payment limits for influencers on various platforms. For Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, these are capped at ₹5 lakh, ₹4 lakh, and ₹3 lakh respectively. On YouTube, the payment limits for videos, shorts and podcasts are set at ₹8 lakh, ₹7 lakh, ₹6 lakh and ₹4 lakh respectively. These figures highlight the government's commitment to leveraging social media for transparent communication.
Digital agency 'V-Form' to handle government's advertisements
As per the new policy, a digital agency named "V-Form" has been appointed to manage the government's advertisements. This agency will be responsible for showcasing videos, social media posts and reels related to government schemes and achievements. The implementation of the Uttar Pradesh Digital Media Policy 2024 will commence as soon as the rules are established, reports said.
