Western Railway's awareness drive on carrying excess luggage in trains
The Western Railway's Rajkot division is launching a 15-day-long drive to create awareness among passengers about carrying excess luggage in trains and penalty it attracts. Passengers traveling in second-class compartments can carry 70kg baggage, of which 35kg baggage can be carried free of cost, railway officials said. Similarly, AC first-class passengers can carry 150kg baggage, of which 70kg is free of charge. Here's more.
Majority of train passengers aren't aware of luggage rules: Official
"A lot of train passengers are not aware about the provisions regarding carrying luggage. This is why we have decided to launch a 15-day awareness drive from June 8," said PB Ninawe, Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), Rajkot division. "Passengers are required to book the excess luggage. If they are found traveling with unbooked luggage, they will be charged six-times the prescribed rate," he said.
Rajkot division collected Rs. 37,440 as fine
In April, the Western Railway's Rajkot division had collected fines worth Rs. 37,440 from the passengers who were found to be carrying excessive luggage, said DRM Ninawe.
