Woman undergoes sex-change operation for girlfriend, gets rejected after surgery
Love hurts. And, sometimes it does brutally! Just like it did for Deepu R Darshan from Kozhikode, Kerala, who underwent a sex-change operation to marry his girlfriend Sapna (name changed), only to get rejected by the latter. On Monday, 23-year-old Deepu narrated his love story to media, by going back to a year when Deepu wasn't Deepu, but Archana Raj. Here's her story.
Couple met in November 2017, and soon became close friends
In November 2017, Archana worked in the sales division of a private electronics firm in Kerala, while Sapna, 22, worked in the company's client servicing division. They met that month and became close friends soon. Archana was married at that time but got divorced as it didn't click. This brought Archana and Sapna closer, and they realized they wanted to be life partners.
Sapna asked Archana for sex-change after her marriage got fixed
Archana said Sapna started seeing her as a male, mainly because of her jeans-and-shirt attire, and they started behaving like a couple. "I saw her as my wife and she saw me as her husband," Archana-turned-Deepu said. And when Sapna's marriage got fixed, she told Archana that she cannot live without her, and insisted to change her sex so that they could marry.
Soon after surgery, Sapna started avoiding Deepu's calls, messages
Together, with a lot of research and a little help from Archana's uncle, the couple sought ways to carry out a sex-reassignment surgery. Archana underwent the surgery at a hospital in Chennai on October 25, 2018. He took the name Deepu as he said it was suggested by Sapna. But, soon after the surgery, Sapna started ignoring Deepu's calls and refused to marry him.
Deepu files police complaint, Sapna denies having feelings for him
On November 6, exactly a year after they had met, Deepu filed a police complaint against Sapna, accusing her of cheating him after promising to marry him. However, in a twist, Sapna told police that she had no feelings for Deepu, and had not asked him to undergo any sex change operation. Sapna's relatives said Deepu had psychological problems, and this was his imagination.
Deepu believes Sapna is being emotionally blackmailed by relatives
While Sapna maintained her stand against Deepu in court, Deepu believes she's being blackmailed by her relatives. He added that he wants to live with Sapna, if she's willing. Otherwise, he'll tell the whole world the real story. "If not for her, I wouldn't have undergone the surgery. I prefer to be a woman. But a gender reversal is impossible for me," he said.

However, contradicting Deepu's claims, The All Kerala Transmen's Association (AKTA) said Deepu, their online support group member, has been vocal about his male gender identity. Also, Deepu told them he doesn't regret his surgery. However, they do understand that Deepu is in trauma and 'would like to wait for him to be in a better place to make his decision about his identity.'
