Maharashtra: To take revenge from in-laws, woman poisoned food
The Maharashtra police arrested a woman on Friday for purportedly poisoning food, served at a programme in Mahad village in Khalapur to take revenge from her in-laws. After eating the poisoned food, five including four children under 13 died. Over 100 people attended the housewarming feast. The 24-year-old woman Pragya alias Jyoti Suresh Survase's in-laws were relatives of the host.
Pragya mixed poison meant for killing snakes with food
Those who lost their lives were Kalyani Shingude (7), Pragati Shinde (11), Rishikesh Shinde (12), Vijay Shinde (11) and Gopinath Nakure (53), after eating food at Subhash Mane's celebration. Pragya is the daughter-in-law of Subhash Mane's brother-in-law. She was reportedly upset with the taunts about her failed first marriage and complexion. She mixed poison meant to kill snakes with the food, police believed.
Earlier, Mane revealed relatives from other villages were called
The host Mane told his daughter and wife started vomiting after eating the food. He revealed the food was prepared at home. As more and more people started falling sick, relatives from outside the village were called to take people to the hospital. The police sealed the kitchen and probed all angles like deliberate poisoning and pesticide attack in the matter.
Pragya accepted the crime during interrogation
Khalapur SP Anil Paraskar said Pragya showed discomfort when police started questioning those who prepared the food. She broke down and accepted the crime. "She even showed us the spot where she disposed the packet in which the bottle of poison was brought to the house," Paraskar said.
