She was harassed for not bearing a male child
"She was strangled to death by her in-laws at their home in village Dindoli, some 80 km from the district headquarters, on Thursday," the police inspector said. He said according to the deceased's brother Krishna Baghel, Ratan Singh and his parents used to harass his sister for giving birth to four daughters and not bearing a male child.
Accused have been booked under IPC Sections 302 and 304B
"Krishna Baghel told the police his sister had given birth to the fourth daughter just three months ago," he added. "The family would also harass the woman for dowry," Tiwari said. "The accused have been booked under IPC Sections 302 (murder) and 304B (dowry death), but no arrest has been made so far," the police officer said.
A similar incident was reported in Madurai in February
A similar incident regarding a male heir was reported in February this year where a 55-year-old woman was arrested in the Madurai district for killing her newborn granddaughter. The woman, K Nagammal, was the baby's paternal grandmother, according to The New Indian Express. According to police, Nagammal confessed during interrogation that she was unhappy about her daughter-in-law giving birth to a third girl child.
