Case against Wikipedia editors over controversial content on Sambhaji Maharaj
What's the story
The Maharashtra Cyber Cell has filed a case against four to five Wikipedia editors for not removing alleged historical facts about Maratha ruler Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, India Today reported.
The disputed material is accused of spreading misinformation and potentially inciting a law and order situation.
The Cyber Cell had previously issued a notice demanding the removal of this content and sent 15 emails to the US-based organization but did not receive any response.
Film fallout
Controversy erupts following release of 'Chhaava'
The row over the Wikipedia content gained steam after the release of Chhaava, a Bollywood movie based on Sambhaji Maharaj's life.
The film stars Vicky Kaushal and Rashmika Mandhana in lead roles.
Reacting to the growing situation, Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis asked Cyber Cell to take this matter up with Wikipedia immediately.
He emphasized that "freedom of expression is not unlimited" and shouldn't violate others' freedoms.
Regulatory appeal
Fadnavis calls for regulations against historical distortions
"Wikipedia does not operate from India, and it is run by volunteers who edit the content. We can, however, request them to implement regulations that will prevent such distortions of historical facts," Fadnavis said earlier.
He said he will speak to the Union government about these issues and stressed that action can be taken when obscenity crosses limits.
He also raised concerns over unauthorized sharing of cabinet agenda documents before official meetings, cautioning ministers' offices against breaking the law.
