Commuters in Delhi-NCR might face transportation challenges on Thursday and Friday due to a strike organized by over 15 auto and taxi driver unions. Union leader demands end to 'game of donations'
Kishan Verma, President of Delhi Auto Taxi Transport Congress Union, expressed his frustration over the government's lack of response to their concerns. "For several years, we have been writing to governments and departments about companies like Ola and Uber, but no one listens," he said. Verma accused these businesses of operating as a "game of donations," with the government also involved in this game.
Strike aims to address employment concerns, illegal activities
Verma emphasized the need for addressing employment issues faced by auto and taxi drivers due to private cab services like Ola and Uber. He alleged that these services are involved in smuggling as well as trade in alcohol and drugs. "To address these issues, we are going on strike," Verma declared. The strike will see all auto and taxi services in Delhi-NCR suspended on the two days.
Union calls for ban on app-based cab services
Verma suggested a ban on app-based cab services, stating, "We are not getting anything. E-rickshaw and bikes with private number plates are plying on roads." He also proposed the development of a government-backed application to counter ride-hailing service companies that charge up to 45% commission on their trips. The strike will affect various vehicles including autos, kaali-peeli taxis, economic radio taxis, and taxis with all-India tourist permits.
