Union budget to be presented on February 1
Parliamentary affairs minister Ananth Kumar announced that the Parliament's budget session is set to begin on January 29. The Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs has recommended that the budget be presented on February 1. On January 29, President Kovind will address the joint sitting of the House. How will the Budget session be held?
Interestingly, this Budget session will be the government's last full-fledged budget before the 2019 LS elections. The first part of the session will be held from January 29 to February 9. After a recess, the parliament will again meet from March 5 till April 6.
What were the controversies surrounding the earlier budget session?
Meanwhile, in 2017, controversies marred Budget proceedings. The Modi-led government brought the budget forward by a month to February 1. Due to assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab etc., opposition protested against this move. They wanted the budget to be presented in March, as per norm. Moreover, government also ended the presentation of a separate railway budget. It was merged with the general budget.
