Woman dies after surgery, Gurugram hospital allegedly charges Rs. 17L
Another private hospital is under the scanner for medical negligence that allegedly resulted in a woman's death. Rajendra Singh has filed a complaint against Gurugram's Columbia Asia Hospital, where his 67-year-old mother underwent a surgery last month. Her overall treatment cost Rs. 17L. But she died 18 days later. However, hospital authorities have denied the accusations, saying her family knew the risks well.
'Patient had pains after the first surgery, had three more'
According to Singh, his mother was admitted to Columbia Asia on January 8 for gallstones. She was operated upon the next day, but started having severe stomach ache soon after. Further checkups found that her intestines were damaged, Singh said. The hospital then conducted three more surgeries and put her on ventilation, but she died of a cardiac arrest. He was charged Rs. 17L.
'Patient's family was informed about risks well'
However, the hospital says the gall bladder surgery had been conducted at another hospital in August'17. At Columbia Asia, she underwent a surgery to remove stones from the common bile duct but "had a known complication." GM Dr Chaitanya Pathania added she was covered under the Ex-serviceman Contributory Health Scheme, and they had submitted the discounted bill of Rs. 4.59L for clearance.
Police awaiting report from the health department
Police have accepted the complaint, but are awaiting directions from the health department, which will conduct an enquiry. Cops say they forwarded the complaint to the chief medical officer in the first week of February, but the health department says it hasn't received it yet.
