'What kind of doctors...': Deceased MBBS student's cousin to seniors
An 18-year-old MBBS student of GMERS Medical College and Hospital in Dharpur Patan, Gujarat, died after an alleged ragging incident. The incident took place on Saturday night when the first-year student, Anil Methania, and others were allegedly made to stand for three hours by seniors during a ragging session called "introduction." Methania collapsed and was rushed to the hospital, where he was declared dead.
15 senior students arrested, college initiates probe
Fifteen senior students have been arrested in connection with Methania's death. They have been booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, wrongful confinement, unlawful assembly, and using obscene words. The college's anti-ragging committee has recorded statements of 26 students and confirmed that 11 first-year students were ragged by the accused seniors.
Family's distress and college's action
Anil's family, living over 150 km away in Surendranagar district, was shocked to receive a call about his hospitalization. His cousin Gaurav Methaniya was worried about the character of the seniors involved and what kind of doctors they would turn out to be: "What kind of doctors will they become with such criminal minds?" The college has suspended the accused students from hostel and academic activities pending further investigation.
College dean confirms punitive measures
The University Grants Commission has banned ragging in all forms on educational campuses and calls for strict action against those guilty. Dr. Hardik Shah, the college dean, confirmed punitive measures would be taken if the seniors are found responsible for ragging. Anil's body has been sent for postmortem to ascertain the cause of death.
