UP Governor: Kasganj violence shameful, shouldn't be repeated
UP CM Yogi Adityanath is being pulled up for his state's law-and-order situation after the disturbing Kasganj violence on Republic Day. Governor Ram Naik termed the event a "blot." He asked the government to ensure that such an incident doesn't occur again. R-Day celebrations were marred by violence between two groups which resulted in the death of one person and injured over 10.
What exactly happened at Kasganj?
Reportedly, volunteers from the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and the Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) had taken out a "Tiranga yatra" bike rally without requisite permission from the administration. Another community reportedly objected to the rally, a verbal altercation followed, and eventually violence broke out. About 112 have been arrested and Section 144 of the CrPC has been imposed to deter further violence.
What did Governor Naik say?
Considering that public property was destroyed and one person was killed, Naik described the incident as "shameful." He noted that such an incident had occurred in the state for the first time in the last 9-10 months. He said, "Whatever happened in Kasganj wasn't good. The government is probing the incident. It should initiate effective measures to ensure that such incidents are not repeated."
Vice-president Venkaiah Naidu asks Yogi to tone up law-and-order
Not only Naik, Vice-president Venkaiah Naidu also advised Yogi to make law and order the "top-most priority." He said, "Those who have firearms should return weapons. In UP, a large number of people have firearms. This is main cause of crime incidents."
What is the government's response to the situation?
Meanwhile, senior cabinet minister Sidharth Nath Singh observed that shops have opened. He added, "Situation is returning to normal, which is a good sign." Drone cameras have been deployed for aerial surveillance. Explosives were found in house-to-house searches. Thus, the state police said National Security Act (NSA) will be invoked against these culprits. The Yogi government has stated that the guilty will be punished.
