WB: Peacock dies after selfie-lovers manhandle it, pull its feathers
In West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district, a peacock died after villagers of Barighoria gram panchayat area manhandled the bird on Sunday. The National Bird roaming in the village triggered frenzy among locals, many of whom wanted to click selfies with it. Reportedly, few tried spreading its feathers, while others pulled the bird's leg. Sadly, the bird died soon after. Here are the details.
Sick bird couldn't free itself from shackles people
Speaking of the death, wildlife warden of Jalpaiguri, Seema Chowdhury said the villagers' action can't be justified. "We are also trying to find out how the bird fell ill," he added. Local media reported the bird was already ill and was bitten by a dog. That's why, it couldn't escape the shackles of villagers. The police gave the bird's carcass to wildlife personnel of Binnaguri.
Elders of village came to poor bird's rescue
As the charade of clicking photos with the bird was in full swing, elders of the village informed police about the incident. However, the locals claimed the bird died due to dog bites. The authorities are waiting for an autopsy report.
Meanwhile, in Gurugram 22 peacocks died due to disease
Miles away from West Bengal, 22 peacocks have lost their lives in the last 15 days in Bhondsi, Gurugram after the outbreak of Virulent Newcastle Disease. The forest officials have set up a medical team to treat the infected birds. While the Gurugram incident is a medical case, what happened in West Bengal shows humans have taken obsession with selfie way too far.
