Kolkata rape-murder: Ex-RG Kar principal's medical registration canceled
The West Bengal Medical Council (WBMC) has canceled the medical registration of former RG Kar Medical College principal Sandip Ghosh amid an ongoing Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the Kolkata rape-murder case. The decision follows a show cause notice issued by the WBMC to Ghosh, who is currently in CBI custody following his arrest in connection with the case.
Ghosh's name removed from Registered Medical Practitioners list
Ghosh's name has been officially removed from the list of Registered Medical Practitioners maintained by the WBMC. The license cancelation was carried out under various provisions of the Bengal Medical Act. The WBMC had previously warned Ghosh that failure to respond satisfactorily to their show cause notice could result in his registration being canceled.
Indian Medical Association's request for Ghosh's license cancelation
The Indian Medical Association (IMA), West Bengal, had also requested the WBMC to cancel Ghosh's medical registration immediately. In a letter to WBMC president Sudipta Roy, IMA Bengal expressed the medical fraternity's concern over why Ghosh's registration had not been canceled despite non-compliance with constitutional provisions. The letter was signed by IMA Bengal president Dilip Kumar Dutta and honorary secretary Santanu Sen.
Service Doctors's Forum calls for dissolution of WBMC
The Service Doctors's Forum has also written to the National Medical Commission and Bengal governor, calling for the dissolution of the WBMC. The forum cited corruption charges and other irregularities against functionaries like president Roy and vice-president Sushanta Roy as reasons for their demand. They claimed that there was massive rigging during the WBMC election in 2022 and that top functionaries are now facing corruption charges.
Resignations and credibility issues plague WBMC
The credibility of the WBMC has been further questioned with at least five members of the council announcing their resignation following the RG Kar incident. These resignations were reportedly due to concerns over the council's credibility. Ghosh himself is a member of this embattled council, alongside Avik De and Birupaksha Biswas.
