West Bengal: Suspecting child abduction, mob beats saree-clad man
In yet another incident of mob anger reported from West Bengal, a man in his 20s was beaten on suspicion of being a child kidnapper in Malda district's English Bazaar, on Friday. The mob got suspicious when it saw the victim roaming near Aurobindo Park, wearing a saree. He was rescued and taken to Malda Medical College and Hospital. Here are the details.
Victim not in a state to talk after the incident
After the assault, the doctors told police officers that the victim wasn't in a state to reveal anything. Councillor of ward 25 of English Bazar municipality, Dulal Nandan Chaki, who rescued the man, said he doesn't believe the child abduction theory. Chaki explained the man saw a boy standing near a temple and tried to hand him something. The mob then attacked him.
Apparently, man was trying to give boy a fruit
According to police, the man was supposedly trying to give the boy a fruit. The police are trying to find out where the man came from and other details pertaining to him. Expressing shock over the recent incidents of mob attacks, local MLA Nihar Ranjan Ghosh said, "We have to take stern action against those spreading rumours of child lifting."
Just days ago, a man was beaten to death
This incident comes just days after a man was tied to a pole and beaten to death by a mob in nearby Habibpur, again on the suspicion of child lifting. After the incident on Wednesday, the police filed an FIR against 150 people. They also arrested Basu Biswas, Choton Singha and Jiban Haldar, on the basis of a video of lynching and produced them in court.
