West Bengal: Man tricks wife, sells her kidney for dowry
A 28-year-old woman in West Bengal, a mother, was being harassed for dowry since her marriage in 2005. Still unsatisfied, the husband tricked her and sold one of her kidneys without her knowledge two years ago. The woman discovered it just three months earlier, when she went to the doctor after suffering acute stomach aches. The man and his brother have now been nabbed.
Husband took her to a private hospital for stomach pains
Since her marriage to Biswajit Sarkar, Rita, mother of an 11-year-old, was being harassed for dowry. She was often tortured by the Lalgola-based family of the cloth merchant. Two years ago, she had acute stomach pains. Biswajit then took her to a private hospital in Kolkata, where doctors said her inflamed appendix had to be removed. But the pain only worsened after the surgery.
The surgery only intensified her pain
However, instead of helping her, Biswajit asked her to tell no one about the operation and refused to take her to doctors. Three months ago, with her own relatives' help, she went to the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital, where she was shocked to know her right kidney was missing. A second checkup at a Malda nursing home confirmed the findings.

Rita then informed police, who nabbed Biswajit and his brother. Their mother is on the run. They confessed they had sold her kidney to a Chhattisgarh businessman. Cops suspect a kidney smuggling racket in play. Murshidabad police will raid the hospital where Rita had the surgery. Meanwhile, the two men have been charged with attempt to murder, dealing in human organs and more.
