Haryana village takes up wall art as an employment source
A village in Haryana's Nuh district has taken up wall art as a source of generating employment for its residents. The walls of the village named Kherla were once as dull as the lives of the unemployed people residing there, but now the walls are painted with vibrant colors and pictures that tell the stories of people residing in the area. Each wall art has a message to motivate people
Some of the paintings on the walls are decorated with bright colored stars, while some depict a girl on a swing that leaves behind the message of encouraging the girl child. The walls also have a sketch of birds flying out of cages that are made to motivate people to break boundaries.
Wall art project an initiative by Gurgaon NGO
The residents of the village who were earlier reluctant to this project now do the drawings on the walls themselves and each family buys their own paint. The project is an initiative taken up by Gurgaon-based NGO Donate an Hour (DoaR) that mainly focuses on education. For villagers who were unable to paint, DoaR volunteers and other youngsters helped them in learning to paint.
Project started to promote village as tourist spot
DoAr founder, Meenakshi Singh said that they were called by officials to improve the village's standard of education. However, they realized that the residents were extremely poor "not due to lack of education but because of lack of opportunities". Singh said the project was then shifted towards employing them by promoting the village as a tourist spot using art that can draw the crowd.
