With the Lok Sabha elections just three months away, it's time to gear up. And it's not just the candidates and campaigners who should be preparing, voters should be equally ready. As part of the preparation, all eligible citizens must apply for a Voter ID card, if they don't have one. Here's your step-by-step guide on how to apply for a Voter ID online.
Who can apply?
All Indian citizens who have attained the minimum legal age of 18 years, can apply for a Voter ID card. The applicant must be of sound mind, free of any criminal charges, and should not be facing financial bankruptcy.
Documents needed for Voter ID card application
For a new Voter ID card application, following documents are required: 1) One passport-size photograph. 2) Any valid age proof, such as Birth certificate, Class 5/8/10 Marksheet, Indian Passport, PAN card, Driving License, or Aadhaar letter. 3) Any valid address proof, such as Passport, DL, Water Bill, Electricity Bill, Rent Agreement, etc. 4) A duly filled age-declaration form, in case the applicant belongs to 21+ age group.
Step-by-step guide to applying for a Voter ID card online
First off, log on to the official website of the National Voters' Services Portal. Then click on 'Form 6' link, ie. for registration of new voter/due to shifting from AC (Assembly constituency). On the next page, fill up necessary personal and residential information. Next up, upload the required documents. Finally, check the declaration, enter the Captcha code, click on 'Submit' button, and you're done.
How to track your application status online?
Post successful submission of your application form, a Tracking reference ID will be issued to you. So, in case you wish to check your application status, log back on to the NVSP portal. Then on the homepage, click on 'Track application status' link, enter your reference ID, and click 'Track status' button. Your application status will flash on the screen.
