Trump and Modi to receive rakhis from remote Haryanvi village
With rakhi approaching, Donald Trump is set to received 1001 rakhis from a remote village in Haryana. This gesture by the people of the Muslim-dominated Marora village is to symbolically represent the "wish of the people that ties are further strengthened between India and the US", said the NGO which has adopted the village. The villagers also made 501 rakhis for PM Modi.
The village profile
Marora is a tiny village with 140 houses. Initially only 45 houses had toilets, but the NGO managing the village, constructed 95 more in a bid to make the village open defecation free.
Marora was also known as Trump's village
The remote village of Marora in Haryana's Mewat region came into the limelight when the chief of the Sulabh International Social Service Organization (SISSO) had announced that the village be renamed to "Trump's village". However, later, the district administration pronounced the renaming illegal, thereby forcing the NGO to remove any boards mentioning the new name.
Girls of the village want to meet PM Modi
"I have made 150 rakhis within three days for Trump bhaiyaa. I also wrote in a letter to be sent to the White House that the girls of our village want you to visit it with PM Modi," said 15-year-old resident Rekha Rani.
Women in the village consider Trump and Modi as brothers
SISSO has been conducting several welfare programmes for women and girls in Marora. As part of these programmes, students made hundreds of rakhis for Donald Trump and Narendra Modi. "Women and girls in the village consider them their elder brothers," said Monica Jain, the vice president of SISSO. The consignment for Trump was shipped yesterday so that it reaches the US on 7th August.
