Tripura: VHP activists stage rally seeking ban on cow slaughter
Dozens of VHP and Bajrang Dal activists took to streets on Sunday in Arundhatinagar, Tripura, seeking a ban on cow slaughter. Organizational secretary Amal Chakraborty said they won't tolerate the slaughter of "divine" cows in Tripura. He added, "Cow slaughtering is done by a section of Bangladeshis who have intruded here in the Marxist regime. We want this practice to be stopped immediately."
Rally ended when police intervened, but no complaint lodged
Amidst thunderous chants of 'Jai Shri Ram', Chakraborty said cow slaughter won't be tolerated. CM Biplab Kumar Deb requested agitators to withdraw protests. The rally finally ended when police intervened. Later, minority community members gathered in front of local BJP MLA Surajit Datta raising concerns about such protests, but no police complaint has been lodged. Datta promised to look into the matter.
Local BJP leaders ruled out beef ban in Tripura
After coming to power in the northeastern state, local BJP leaders had said they would not ban beef consumption. The party's state in-charge Sunil Deodhar had said last month, "Here (in Tripura) there are lots of Christians and Muslims, there are also some Hindus who consume beef. I believe that there shouldn't be a ban on it."
