The investigation into the Uttarakhand nurse's murder commenced on July 31, following a missing person report filed by her sister at Rudrapur Kotwali. The report was lodged when the nurse failed to return home after her shift on July 30. The victim, a mother to an 11-year-old girl, was employed at a private hospital in Rudrapur and resided in Gadarpur's Islamnagar with her daughter.
CCTV footage leads to identification of suspect
CCTV footage from Indra Chowk in Rudrapur, captured on July 30, showed the nurse boarding an e-rickshaw after her work shift. Further analysis of the footage led police to identify a suspicious man following her. On August 8, her body was discovered in an empty plot in Uttar Pradesh's Bilaspur. The body of the nurse was sent for post-mortem, which confirmed that she had been raped and strangled to death.
Post-Mortem confirms rape, strangulation of Uttarakhand nurse
Following this revelation, police began tracing her mobile phone, which the accused had stolen along with ₹3,000 in cash after committing the crime. Senior Superintendent of Police Udham Singh Nagar, Manjunath T C stated that "it was soon confirmed that it was the body of the missing woman." The accused, identified as Dharmendra, a daily wage laborer from Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh, was arrested in Rajasthan's Jodhpur on August 14. During the investigation, Dharmendra confessed to the crime.
Accused arrested, confesses to brutal crime
He admitted that he had seen the nurse walking alone on July 30 and forcibly dragged her into the bushes. When she resisted his sexual assault attempt, he slammed her head against the road and strangled her with a scarf. After committing the crime, Dharmendra fled with her belongings. Police have also detained his wife for interrogation. This brutal crime occurred amid ongoing nationwide protests demanding justice for a 31-year-old trainee doctor who was also raped and murdered in Kolkata.
