Uttarakhand High Court rejects delimitation notifications
The Uttarakhand High Court has quashed all notifications regarding fresh delimitation of municipal bodies in the state. Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia declared the notifications "unconstitutional" and said that they were not executed through the governor. The state government had expanded the limits of municipal bodies last year in November through the state Urban Development Department to bring a large number of villages under their ambit.
State govt carried delimitation exercise arbitrarily: U'khand Congress President
Uttarakhand Congress president Pritam Singh said the order justifies the party's stand on the issue, which opposed the exercise. He also said that the state government carried out the delimitation exercise without taking people's views or conducting public hearings. Another petition is pending in the high court seeking timely elections to civic bodies in the state for which the deadline expired on May 4.
