UPSC topper thanks girlfriend, his family, for their relentless support
The results of Civil Services Examinations 2018 were declared on April 5 by the Union Public Services Commission (UPSC). IIT-Bombay alumnus, Kanishak Kataria, bagged AIR 1 in his first attempt. After the success, Kataria not only thanked his family but also expressed his gratitude towards his girlfriend for their moral support. Notably, a total of 759 candidates cleared the final round this year.
I thank my parents, sister & my girlfriend, says Kataria
While talking to Asian News International, Kataria said, "I thank my parents, sister & my girlfriend for the help & moral support. (But) I never expected to get the first rank. People will expect me to be a good administrator & that's exactly my intention." This is probably the first time that someone has thanked his/her partner after a smashing success in UPSC.
'A surprising moment. Never expected to get the 1st rank'
Kataria, son of an IAS officer, found his inclination later
Although Kataria's father is also an IAS officer (currently posted in Rajasthan), he developed an inclination towards civil services when he compared his life in India and abroad. "To make the system better in India, I decided to get into it," Kataria told BBC Hindi.
Kataria secured AIR 44 in JEE'10, worked as Data Scientist
In 2010, Kataria secured AIR 44 in IIT-JEE and subsequently completed his Bachelors of Technology from IIT-Bombay in Computer Science. He moved to South Korea in 2014 to work with Samsung and later came back to Bengaluru to work as a software developer. Before starting his preparations for civil services, Kataria was working as a Data Scientist with QPLUM in Bengaluru.
Didn't follow any rocket-science formula for preparation, says Kataria
When asked about his preparation strategy, Kataria told BBC Hindi that there was no rocket-science formula. He consulted a few people and adapted the suggestions according to his understanding. He attended coaching classes for 7-8 months in Delhi to get a basic knowledge for the exam. "Apart from that, I have been studying at home by myself since last March," added Kataria.
