From 2020, Combined Geo-Scientist and Geologist Examination to undergo changes
From 2020, the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) will be implementing the new changes that were announced earlier for the Combined Geo-Scientist and Geologist Examination (CGGE). UPSC took the decision of revising the scheme, pattern and syllabus for the exam after consulting the Ministry of Mines, the Nodal Ministry. But, what is CGGE?
CGGE is a recruitment exam conducted by UPSC for the posts of Geologist, Geophysicist and Chemist Group 'A' in Geological Survey of India (GSI) and Junior Hydro-geologist (Scientist 'B'), Group 'A' for Central Ground Water Board. From 2020, this exam will be conducted in three stages, i.e., Preliminary Examination, Main Examination and Personality Test. The preliminary stage exam will be an objective-type computer-based test.
Preliminary stage consists of 400 marks divided among two papers
Further, the preliminary stage will consist of 400 marks, which will be divided among two papers: Paper 1- General studies (worth 100 marks) and Paper 2- stream specific subject (worth 300 marks). The applicants can choose from the following three streams: 1- Geologist & Jr. Hydrogeologist with Geology/Hydrogeology as the subject 2- Geophysicist with Geophysics as the subject 3- Chemist which will have Chemistry.
Applicants can choose from four streams for the Main Examination
The applicants will also be screened on the basis of their preliminary scores. They will then have to sit for a descriptive-type paper in the main examination. It will consist of 600 marks divided among the three subjects specific to the selected stream. The applicants can select any one of the following streams: 1- Geologist 2- Geophysicist 3- Chemist 4- Hydrogeologist
Merit list will consider the scores of all three stages
Later, all the successful applicants will have to appear for the final stage, Personality Test, worth 200 marks. The applicants should note that a merit list will be prepared for the final recruitment and it will combine the scores of all the three stages.
Master's degree a must to apply for the position
Meanwhile, all the interested applicants must note the eligibility criteria given below: Educational Qualification: Must hold a Master's degree in a related field from a recognized university in the country or outside to apply for the position. Age Limit: Applicants must be between the ages of 21 and 32 as on January 1, 2020. Please note, age relaxation is provided to a few applicants.
