UPSC civil services prelims result to be declared in mid-July
Media reports suggest that the results of this year's civil services preliminary exam is expected to come out in July second-week. The exam, which is the screening test for the Mains, was conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) on June 2. In 2018, the prelims were held on June 3, and the results of which were declared on July 15. Here's more.
Toughest exam in 5yrs, cut-off expected to go high still
All the candidates who had appeared for the exam can check their results, once announced, on UPSC's official website, upsc.gov.in. Earlier reports suggested that this year's prelims exam is the toughest among the last five year's papers, as per experts' evaluation. Despite that, the cut-off is expected to go up. The estimated cut-off for the general category is expected to be 105 marks.
This year's prelims tested candidate's core concepts unlike previous years
If the cut-off goes up as expected, it will reverse the trends of the last three years. In the years 2016, 2017 and 2018, the cut-off, out of 200 marks, was recorded at 116, 105 and 98, respectively. Reportedly, this year's paper tested the core concepts of the candidates, unlike previous years, where topics like polity, geography and modern history dominated the exam.
Mains scheduled on September 20, will be objective type test
Meanwhile, experts have suggested that all the candidates who expect to score more than 90 marks in the prelims must start preparing for the Mains. The Mains, be an objective type test, is scheduled on September 20. Those who clear the Mains exams will subsequently have to appear for the interview round. Thereafter, a final merit list of all the candidates will be prepared.
Final merit list will be released after the interview round
The final merit list will be prepared on the basis of the marks scored in Mains and interview round. UPSC will also release the marks of all the candidates, even of those who could not make it to the recommended candidates list, for other employment opportunities. To note, several private and public agencies like NTPC, SAI, may use these marks to appoint suitable candidates.
This year, UPSC has announced a total of 896 vacancies
Notably, the number of candidates shortlisted for the Mains exam will be around 12-13 times more than that of all the vacancies announced. Coming to the vacancies, UPSC has notified that this year, there are about 896 posts to be filled in various civil services. Each year around 10 lakh candidates register for the examination, as per the data released by UPSC.
