14-year-old sets herself ablaze after being harassed, gangraped since months
A 14-year-old girl in UP set herself on fire allegedly after being harassed by four men since months and recently gangraped. She was forced to drop out of school and then gave up tuitions due to the constant stalking. On January 6, she came home, doused herself in kerosene and set herself ablaze. She was hospitalized with 80% burns and died five days later.
The men constantly followed her to school and tuitions
Shobhit, Ankit Singh, Mohit Kumar and Ravi had allegedly been stalking the girl of Panchgaon Patti village since months. They would follow her to school and then to tuitions. Taking her silence for acquiescence, they then gangraped her, her family said. She didn't tell anyone about the attack for days. All the four belong to neighboring Gawdi village, they said.
Was scared due to threats, family says
Her family didn't dare file a complaint earlier due to threats, and "mustered courage to lodge an FIR only after her death," her brother said. They initially told neighbors she had burned herself accidentally. Only after some organizations offered help did they approach police. An FIR has now been lodged against the four. One has been arrested. Hunt is on for the others.
