UP: Married for ten-years, woman alleges forceful conversion to Islam
A 27-year-old woman has alleged she was forced to convert to Islam by her husband and approached Uttar Pradesh police following which the Meerut-based man has been booked. In her complaint, the woman said she wed the accused ten years ago and was kept under dark about his religion. Surprisingly, she learned he was a Muslim six years after their marriage. Here's more.
Woman learned of husband's religion after moving to Meerut
Speaking of the case, Meerut SSP Rajesh Kumar Pandey said the woman married the accused named Raju in Kolkata, her native place. Shockingly, it was only after the couple moved to Meerut, six years post marriage, that she learned her husband was a Muslim. She accused her husband and family members changed her name to Heena and tortured her to embrace Islam.
After escaping in-laws, woman contacts Bajrang Dal activists
On Saturday, the woman managed to escape her in-laws and approached the Bajrang Dal. A member of the right-wing organization, Balraj Dungar said the woman first told them about what had happened, and later the SSP. "She kept quiet for a long time but could not hold on any longer as the family began assaulting her and forced her to convert," he said.
Police register case, husband is absconding
The woman is said to have married on May 25, 2007. The police have registered an FIR against the husband under IPC Sections for rape, cheating, assault, and use of force with intent to outrage the modesty of a woman. Reports suggest the husband is absconding. "We have registered an FIR based on her complaint and are investigating her allegations," SSP Pandey said.
