UP: Man loots money kept for wife's cancer treatment
Police in Greater Noida, UP, booked a 50-year-old man recently for allegedly breaking into his own house to steal valuables and cash set aside for his wife's cancer treatment. Surendra Singh, along with two of his accomplices, were booked following the complaint by his wife. Notably, the husband and wife recently had some disputes after she was diagnosed with cancer. Here's what went down.
Accused men opened the house's lock using a locksmith's help
The incident occurred on January 29 evening when the 47-year-old woman was not at home. "I was informed by one of the guards of the society that three persons, along with a locksmith, were trying to break open the lock of my house, saying they were the house's owners," she told media. The two accomplices were Surendra's brother, Shailendra and his friend, Nitin.
CCTV footage showed the men trying to open the lock
The woman further said that she found the door of her house ajar and "a gold necklace, eight gold bangles, a pair of gold earrings, eight gold rings, 80 silver coins, silver dishes, a scooter, my daughter's gold earrings, and Rs. 50,000 in cash stolen". She claimed that the CCTV footage outside her apartment showed the three men taking help of a locksmith.
Surendra claimed to be in relationship with another woman
Notably, the couple has been married for 25 years and has two children. Surendra works as an engineer with a private-firm in Delhi and his wife is a teacher. Differences between the two began when she was diagnosed with cancer. "Right after I was diagnosed, he told me he was in a relationship with another woman; and had been for some years," she alleged.
Surendra was in lock-up for few days for assaulting wife
The woman further said that Surendra expressed willingness to marry the other woman. "He wants to deprive me of all my money so that I cannot afford treatment," she alleged. Previously, on January 25, she had called up the police complaining that Surendra had assaulted her, for which he was kept in the police lock-up for a few days.
Accused booked for theft in a dwelling house and trespassing
"Right after he was released, he sought the help of his brother and friend to rob all the money and jewelry I had kept for my cancer treatment," the woman said. Following her complaint, the police have booked the three men accused under the Indian Penal Code Sections 380 and 454 for theft in a dwelling house and trespassing, respectively.
Surendra and accomplices are currently on the run
The police said they are currently probing the CCTV camera footage to find more leads. "The suspects are on the run and soon, they will be arrested," Munish Chauhan, station house officer, Surajpur police station, said.
