UP: East Kanpur police superintendent attempts suicide, in critical condition
In a tragic incident, the superintendent of police of the East Kanpur district, Surendra Kumar Das, made an attempt to take his own life on Wednesday morning at his official residence in Kanpur. Policemen assigned to the SP found him unconscious and rushed him to a nearby hospital. The SP is currently under treatment and in a critical condition. Here are the details.
It appears that Das consumed pesticides to kill himself
According to doctors, the 30-year-old SP was rushed into the hospital at around 6am in the morning. Currently, Das is in a very critical condition and according to ANI, traces of poison has been found in his body. Prima facie, it appears that Das had attempted to end his own life by consuming pesticides. However, no suicide note has been found.
Familial discord could have been the trigger
Das is a 2014 batch IPS officer and had joined the post of SP less than a month back. Notably, the posting was a major promotion, giving him his first independent charge of a district. However, despite the advancement in his career, Das had reportedly been upset over a discord in his family. It's believed that the discord drove him towards suicide.
Yet another suicide attempt by a cop
Das' suicide attempts marks the third reported attempt by a cop to commit suicide since May. In May, an additional SP of the UP Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS), Rajesh Sahni, took his life by shooting himself. He had been instrumental in solving several high-profile terrorism cases. In the same month, top Mumbai cop Himanshu Roy shot himself, unable to deal with his cancer.
