15-year-old girl sets herself on fire after being molested
A 15-year-old girl set herself ablaze at a village in Uttar Pradesh's Hamirpur on Tuesday morning after being molested by a boy, police said. "The girl has been rushed to Kanpur for specialized treatment as she has received severe burn injuries," they said. Hamirpur Superintendent of Police Narendra Kumar Singh said, "The girl's family had beaten up the 16-year-old boy for allegedly molesting her."
The boy used to tease and harass her: Girl's family
The victim's family had at that time refused to lodge a complaint. However, they later alleged that the boy used to often tease and harass her and had done the same on Monday. The police had let the accused go after a warning.
Girl's statement has been recorded in front of a magistrate
Disturbed by repeated harassments and molestation, on Monday, the girl SPrinkled kerosene on herself around 8 am on Tuesday and set herself ablaze, according to her family. "Before sending the girl to Kanpur for treatment, her statement was recorded in front of a magistrate," the SP said, adding further action will be taken on the basis of the complaint of the girl's family.
Similar incident was reported in Madhya Pradesh
A similar incident was reported last year in October where a 14-year-old girl in MP's Rewa district attempted suicide by setting herself on fire after a 15-year-old boy allegedly raped her, according to a Times Now report. The accused forcibly entered her house when she was alone. BP Singh, Sub-Divisional Police Officer Dabora, Reva, said, "Both are minors and they had a love affair."
Another such incident was reported in UP's Mirzapur last year
In another incident reported last year, a 15-year-old girl in UP's Mirzapur district had set herself on fire after failing to stop frequent molestation by a neighborhood boy, according to The Telegraph. The girl belonged to a family of marginal farmers. "The accused used to molest my daughter on her way to school or coaching," the girl's grandfather had said.
