Unnao teen won't be airlifted to AIIMS for now: SC
The Unnao rape survivor, who met with a horrendous accident on Sunday, will be treated in Lucknow and won't be airlifted to AIIMS Delhi, the Supreme Court said on Friday. The top court gave the order after her family said they want her treatment to continue in the Uttar Pradesh capital. She is currently admitted at KGMU Hospital. Here are more details.
Backstory: Rape survivor's car was hit by a truck
For the uninitiated, the survivor was allegedly raped in 2017 by now-expelled BJP MLA Kuldeep Sengar. Ever since the girl spoke up, her father has died in police custody and she has attempted suicide outside Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's residence to get herself heard. On Sunday, while she was en route Raebareli jail to meet her uncle, a truck rammed into her car.
After accident sparked outrage, SC stepped in
In the accident, two aunts of the teen victim died and her lawyer, Mahendra Singh, was injured. Her family accused Sengar of engineering the accident, sparking countrywide outrage. On Thursday, CJI Ranjan Gogoi-led bench took cognizance of the matter. The bench ordered CM Adityanath to give Rs. 25 lakh as compensation to the victim and directed Centre to provide CRPF protection to her family.
Apparently, family doesn't want her to be airlifted for now
During the latest hearing of the case, the survivor's lawyer told the court she can be shifted to the National Capital once she is stable. Earlier, doctors at KGMU had said the victim suffered several fractures. Meanwhile, the bench said the survivor's uncle should be immediately shifted to Tihar jail from Raebareli jail. CJI Gogoi nominated Justice Deepak Gupta to hear the matter.
Media directed to not reveal victim's identity
Moreover, in court, amicus curiae, senior advocate V Giri, complained that some old videos of the survivor and her family were being played in media. On this, SC ordered print and electronic media to not reveal the identity of the victim, directly or indirectly. Further, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the court that CRPF personnel took over the family's protection last night, as ordered.
