Amit Shah to review security situation in Manipur today
What's the story
Union Home Minister Amit Shah will review the security situation in Manipur on Saturday.
This will be the first such review since President's rule was imposed in the state on February 13 after former Chief Minister N Biren Singh resigned.
The meeting will be attended by Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla and top officials of the state government, Army, and paramilitary forces.
Arms surrender
Governor's ultimatum leads to surrender of illegal arms
The security review comes after Governor Bhalla's February 20 ultimatum asking people with illegal arms to surrender them.
This led to the surrender of over 300 weapons, mostly from valley districts. The Meitei radical group Arambai Tenggol alone surrendered 246 firearms.
As the public demanded more time, the deadline to surrender illegal arms has been extended till March 6 at 4:00pm.
Peace restoration
Governor Bhalla's efforts to restore normalcy in Manipur
Since taking office on January 3, Governor Bhalla has been meeting with several stakeholders and chairing several meetings on law and order issues.
He has also issued directions to security forces in a bid to bring normalcy to the state.
The violence in Manipur started after a 'Tribal Solidarity March' was held by hill districts protesting against the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe status in May 2023.
