Thane woman duped of Rs. 7.3 lakh by UK-based man
A 38-year-old woman working with a consultancy firm in Thane, Maharashtra was allegedly duped of Rs. 7.3 lakh by a UK-based man. The complainant, who is separated from her husband and lives with her parents, told the police that while going through a matrimonial site some months back, she befriended the accused, identified as Donald William (23), who claimed to be from Belgravia, London.
To get gifts, he asked her to pay courier services
The man later told the woman that he had sent her a gift parcel and she could take it by making a certain payment to the courier company. She alleged that between June 17-August 9, the accused asked her to make payments several times to the courier firm on various pretexts, like customs clearance of gifts by him, wrong labeling of the parcels, etc.
She got suspicious when he stopped contacting her
However, the woman did not receive any gift parcel after making the payments. Also, the accused had once told her that he had arrived in Delhi'>New Delhi but was indisposed and so could not meet her. After that, he had stopped communicating with her, which made her suspicious. She then filed a complaint with the Rabodi police Monday, Thane police spokesperson, Sukhada Narkar, said.
