Strike disrupts life a day after civilian killings rock Kashmir
Separatists in Kashmir have called for a strike today after two youths were killed allegedly in army firing in Shopian. Shops and offices remained closed in most parts of the Valley. Public transport stayed off roads. However, private cars were seen plying. Mobile internet services were shut down in four districts. Restrictions were imposed in parts of Srinagar.
The incident happened when a mob attacked an army convoy
Two civilians, identified as Javed Bhat and Suhail Lone in their 20s, were killed when the army fired upon protesters in Shopian yesterday. While locals insisted there was only the "slightest provocation," an army spokesperson said a 250-member mob attacked a convoy at Ganaupura Chowk, tried to set vehicles ablaze and even lynch a jawan. Seven personnel were reportedly injured.
'Every civilian killing impairs political process implemented through hard work'
CM Mehbooba Mufti discussed the matter with Defense Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and expressed anguish, officials said. "The CM said every civilian killing, notwithstanding how erroneously made, impairs a political process that has been put on track through hard work by all political parties in the state," a statement read. A probe has been ordered. Sitharaman also assured she would seek a detailed report.
Restrictions on movement, no internet in several areas
Following the killings, restrictions have been imposed in Khanyar, MR Gunj, Nowhatta, Rainawari and Safakadal areas, and parts of Kralkhud and Maisuma police stations. Mobile Internet services have been suspended in Anantnag, Kulgam, Pulwama and Shopian districts; speed has been reduced to 128kbps in rest of Kashmir.
