J&K CM demands probe after assault on Kashmiri students
After reports of two Kashmiri college students getting assaulted in Haryana surfaced, Jammu and Kashmir CM Mehbooba Mufti demanded a probe into the issue, and urged the Haryana government to take stringent action against the perpetrators. The students - Aftab Ahmad (23) and Amjad Ali (22) - were from Haryana Central University in Mahendargarh, around 100 km from Delhi. Here's more on what unfolded.
No one helped the Kashmiri students during the assault
"No one came forward to help us. Soon after the police arrived at the spot. We went to the hospital for check-up and returned to the university campus. We told faculty about the incident and lodged a complaint," said Aftab, one of the assaulted students.
Reason behind attack isn't known yet
The incident happened on Friday when the students were returning to the campus after offering congregational prayers. While the reason for the attack isn't known yet, Jammu and Kashmir DGP Shesh Paul Vaid said that he was in touch with the Haryana DGP to ensure the safety of Kashmiri students. The Mahendargarh SP said that six suspects had been identified based on CCTV footage.
A student gives his account of the incident
"Me and my friend had gone to the mosque to offer namaz yesterday. After we came out of the mosque, we noticed some people following us. Just as we were leaving on my motorbike, a group of 15-20 people started beating us," added Aftab.
Former and current J&K CMs speak out against attack
J&K CM Mehbooba Mufti took to Twitter just hours after the incident, and said that she was "shocked" and "disturbed" by the incident. Meanwhile, former J&K CM Omar Abdullah tagged PM Modi and the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) in a tweet and said that the incident went against the spirit of India and needed to be acted on quickly.
