Tripura declared natural calamity-affected area after devastating floods
The government of Tripura has officially declared the entire state as a natural calamity-affected area. This decision comes in the wake of severe floods that have resulted in significant loss of life and widespread property damage. The floods have caused extensive destruction to both public and private infrastructures across the state.
Floods claim 31 lives, cause estimated ₹15,000 crore damage
The floods have claimed the lives of 31 people so far, with two injured and one person reported missing. Preliminary estimates suggest that the damage caused by these floods amounts to a staggering ₹15,000 crore. This information was disclosed in a memorandum issued by Birjesh Pandey, Secretary of the Relief, Rehabilitation and Disaster Management Department.
State executive committee declares Tripura as natural calamity-affected
The state executive committee (SEC) of the Tripura Disaster Management Authority (TDMA), under the leadership of the chief secretary, convened a meeting on August 24. Given the severity of the situation and its impact on human lives and property, they decided to declare the entire state as a natural calamity-affected area. This declaration has now been officially communicated to all relevant parties.
Central government sends team to assess flood damage
In response to a request from the state government, the central government has dispatched a five-member inter-ministerial team. This team is tasked with conducting an on-the-ground assessment of the damage caused by these devastating floods. Notably, the floods have displaced a total of 53,356 people who are currently residing in 369 relief camps across the state. The administration has begun providing assistance for rebuilding their houses, reports said.
