'Transfer or retire': Tirupati temple to 18 non-Hindu employees
What's the story
The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) board has reportedly launched disciplinary action against 18 of its employees for following non-Hindu traditions.
The move comes as part of the TTD's policy which only allows Hindu employees to serve in its temples and departments.
The accused have been given two options—either be transferred to other government departments or choose the Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS).
Consequences outlined
Non-compliance may lead to further action
The TTD board has warned that not opting for either of the two options given could lead to further action.
Last November, TTD Board Chairman BR Naidu announced that only Hindus should be employed within the temple precincts so that Tirumala remains a symbol of Hindu faith and sanctity.
The decision is backed by the 1989 Endowment Act, which makes it compulsory for all TTD employees to abide by Hindu customs.

Andhra Pradesh government restructured the TTD Board
The same month, the then newly-formed TTD passed a resolution requiring non-Hindus employed by the board to either take voluntary retirement or opt for a transfer to other government departments in Andhra Pradesh.
The Andhra Pradesh government restructured the TTD Board following a scandal in which former Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu claimed substandard ingredients, including animal fat, were used in the temple's famed laddus.
