Bihar: Couple hangs themselves in custody; mob attacks police station
A man and his 14-year-old wife allegedly committed suicide while in police custody in Tarabari village of Bihar's Araria district. The couple had been detained on Thursday afternoon due to the girl being below the legal marriage age of 18. Following their deaths, an angry mob attacked the police station, setting it on fire and throwing stones at the police personnel.
Unlawful marriage leads to tragic custody deaths
The man had married his 14-year-old sister-in-law just two days prior, following the death of his wife. The couple was taken into custody shortly after their marriage due to the bride's underage status. Locals allege that the couple died in police custody after being subjected to physical abuse by officers. A CCTV footage, purportedly from the police lockup, shows a man climbing onto the lockup door and hanging himself with a cloth.
Public outrage erupts, police station set ablaze
News of the couple's death spread rapidly throughout the area, leading to enraged villagers surrounding the Tarabari police station. Upon receiving information about the incident, officers from several nearby stations, including Sadar SDPO Rampukar Singh, arrived at the scene. Despite their presence, the villagers continued their protest and chanted slogans against the police. This incident resulted in injuries to at least five police personnel.
