Bengaluru, Pune ranked as Indian cities with the most traffic
Traffic isn't a problem only in Indian cities but is a universal impediment around the world. While some countries experience heavy gridlocks, others don't mind spending a minute or two extra in a snarl-up. A recent survey ranked 389 cities across the world based on their traffic conditions, revealing Bengaluru and Pune to be among the top global destinations with the most traffic-related problems.
TomTom Traffic Index Ranking 2022 highlights the global traffic conditions
Taking into account 389 cities across 56 countries on six continents of the world, the TomTom Traffic Index measures travel time, fuel expenses, and carbon dioxide emissions of the destinations to highlight their traffic conditions. The data revealed can be a useful tool for drivers, riders, city planners, automakers, and policymakers to curb traffic-related problems in their cities.
Bengaluru ranks 2nd globally, 1st Indian city in the list
Survey reveals that the travel time taken on average to drive 10 km was 29 minutes and 10 seconds. This was 40 seconds more than in 2021. With that, Bengaluru earned the 2nd spot globally and is the first Indian city with the most traffic. It also discloses that in 2022, drivers spent 260 hours driving, of which they spent 134 hours in congestion!
Friday, 6-7 pm was the worst rush hour for Bangaloreans
The worst rush hour for Bangaloreans was on Fridays between 6 pm to 7 pm as driving 10 km on average took them 37 minutes and 20 seconds. October 15 was the worst day for travel with the same distance covered in 33 minutes and 50 seconds! 1009 kg of carbon dioxide emission (with petrol) and 954 kg (with diesel) were made yearly.
Pune followed suit by ranking 6th globally
Pune grabbed the 6th rank and became the 2nd Indian city with the highest traffic-related issues. On average, a driver took 27 minutes and 20 seconds to conquer a distance of 10 km, which is one minute and 10 seconds more than in 2021. Of the 249 hours spent yearly on driving, 121 hours were spent struggling in congestion!
Punekars also had the worst rush hour like Bangaloreans
The worst rush hour in Pune turned out to be exactly the same as in Bangalore. On Fridays between 6 to 7 pm, a driver took 35 minutes and 50 seconds on average to drive 10 km. August 10, which was a Wednesday, was the worst day for the drivers as the same distance took them 34 minutes and 40 seconds.
New Delhi and Mumbai also made it to the list
Other Indian cities, the traffic problems of which have been highlighted in the survey include New Delhi and Mumbai. While the former ranked 34th globally, the latter grabbed the 47th world rank. Drivers in New Delhi, on average, took 22 minutes and 10 seconds to cover a distance of 10 km, while Mumbaikars took 21 minutes and 10 seconds to conquer the same.
London tops the global index with the highest traffic problems
London makes it to the top of this index as a driver in this city took 36 minutes and 20 seconds on average to travel a distance of 10 km. The time taken was 1 minute and 10 seconds more than the previous year. Thursdays, 5 to 6 pm was the worst rush as it took citizens 45 minutes to complete a 10-kilometer commute.
Almere in The Netherlands posed minimal traffic problems for commuters
Securing the 389th spot on the list, Almere in The Netherlands came out to be the destination with no major traffic issues. On average, it took eight minutes and 20 seconds to cover a distance of 10 km. The worst rush hour was Tuesday, 5 to 6 pm where it took commuters 9 minutes and 20 seconds to cover the same distance.
