Efforts on to rescue 2-year-old Sujith Wilson stuck in borewell
All efforts are on to rescue a two-year-old boy who fell into a borewell in Nadukattupatti, near Manapparai, Tamil Nadu, on Friday. The toddler, Sujith Wilson, has been trapped inside the abandoned borewell since Friday evening. Reportedly, Sujith was initially trapped at a depth of around 26 feet, however, he fell further and is now believed to be stuck at 100 feet. Here's more.
Child fell inside borewell while playing near house
Sujith was playing near his house when he fell into borewell at 5:30 pm on Friday. Health Minister Dr. Vijayabaskar, who is present at the site, said the boy was initially trapped at a depth of 26 feet and was responding to calls from the surface. Authorities tried tying his hands with a rope to rescue him, but the child fell deeper, he said.
Adjacent hole being dug to rescue Sujith
Rescue teams are now digging another hole adjacent to the borewell where Sujith fell. According to The Hindu, a rig arrived at the spot at 1 am on Sunday to start drilling a parallel hole to rescue Sujith. Drilling started at 7 am. Reportedly, authorities will dig the hole till a depth of 110 ft which may take up to three hours.
3 firemen to crawl down newly-dug hole to rescue Sujith
The hole is being dug 3.5m away from the borewell and will be 1m wide, reports The Times of India. After the hole has been dug, a tunnel will be created to establish a link to the borewell. Subsequently, the Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue team will send down three firemen down the newly-dug hole to rescue Sujith.
NDRF, SDRF also assisting with rescue operations
Reportedly, around 50 personnel of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) are also providing support for Sujith's rescue. Meanwhile, Deputy Director of Fire Services Priya Ravichandran and the Health Minister are supervising the efforts.
