#HealthBytes: Tips for a healthy sperm count (male fertility)
Infertility is an issue that ruins the lives and relationship of many married couples. Sperm health (sperm count, motility and semen volume) is crucial to the man's fertility and therefore the lady's chances of conceiving. Among other factors, poor dietary and lifestyle choices adversely affect male fertility. Here are simple tips that can help improve sperm count or male fertility.
Eat right!
A healthy, balanced diet is essential for maintaining a healthy sperm count. Go for fresh, whole food items, mainly fruits and vegetables, packed with antioxidants and vitamins, that contribute to sperm health. Getting in more and more of Vitamins E and C would help. Also, stay away from 'tasty-traps' ie. processed fast-food as they will do more harm to your sperm health, than good.
Maintain a healthy weight
Maintaining a healthy weight and a normal Body Mass Index (BMI) is crucial, as obesity is often linked with hormonal imbalance, reduced sperm count and quality, and therefore infertility. If you are obese or overweight, talk to your doctor for a meal/workout plan.
Say goodbye to bad habits
Unhealthy lifestyle choices can significantly lower down healthy sperm count in men. To begin with, reduce your intake of caffeine, colas and soft drinks. Further, reduce, or better off, eliminate your consumption of alcohol, to stay on the safer side. Also, let go of smoking and other forms of substance abuse, as they are often responsible for reduced quality of sperm.
Don't skip your workout session; Take proper rest
Exercise: Studies suggest that men who workout have higher testosterone levels and better sperm quality, compared to those who are inactive. Moderate amount of physical activity on a regular-basis goes a long way for improving your fertility. Sleep: It is also important to get your daily-dose of 7-8 hours of night-time rest, to maintain a healthy sperm count and stay fertile.
Minimize stress and anxiety
Stress is known to reduce sexual satisfaction and impair fertility. This is because stress raises levels of cortisol, that in turn, lowers down testosterone levels. So, aim to lower your stress levels. Simple relaxation activities like walking, meditation and Yoga can help.
