Nagaland encounter: Three terrorists killed, jawan martyred
At least three terrorists, suspected to be from National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN-K) and United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) (ULFA-I), were killed in an encounter in Nagaland's Mon district on June 6. A jawan was also martyred, though it is unconfirmed whether he was from Assam Rifles or Territorial Army. Three were injured. A civilian reportedly lost his life in the gunfight.
How did it transpire?
"The incident (at Lappa in Tizit circle) took place around 10pm. Based on information about movement of terrorists, the officer and his team went to there when they were ambushed and an encounter ensued," army spokesperson Lt Col Chiranjeet Konwer told HT over phone. The encounter lasted for hours. This comes after the government reported a sharp decline in militant activities in the northeast.

In a recent announcement, the Ministry of Home Affairs said that compared to 1,025 incidents of extortion, violence and attacks on security forces in the northeast in 2012, and 732 in 2013, 2016 had seen just 484 such incidents.
