IISc best university, Miranda best college: Top institutes in 8-categories
What's the story
The Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, and Miranda House of Delhi University have emerged as the best university and college respectively in government rankings this year.
The other winners in their respective categories under the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) rankings were IIT-Madras (engineering), AIIMS Delhi (medical) and IIM-Ahmedabad (management).
The total of nine categories included law, architecture and pharmacy too. Details here.

Here's how NIRF ranks institutes
The NIRF rankings, started in 2016 by the HRD ministry, scores institutes on the basis of teaching, research and professional practices, learning and resources, outreach and inclusivity, graduation outcomes, and perception. This time, 3,954 institutes participated, 745 more than last year.
Overall
Not one college in top 10 educational institutes of India
Overall, IISc-Bangalore, which emerged topper last year, topped once again, followed by IIT-Madras, IIT-Bombay, IIT-Delhi, and IIT-Kharagpur.
The next university in the list is JNU at sixth place, followed by two more IITs: Kanpur and Roorkee.
The top-ten list ends with BHU and Anna University, Chennai.
Not one college has made it to the top ten educational institutions.
Engineering/Colleges
IIT-Madras best engineering institute, Miranda House best college
Among engineering institutes, the seven IITs at Madras, Bombay, Delhi, Kharagpur, Kanpur, Roorkee and Guwahati took the top seven spots.
Anna University, IIT-Hyderabad and Institute of Chemical Technology/ICT (Mumbai) made the next three.
Among colleges, Miranda was followed by St. Stephen`s (Delhi), Bishop Heber (TN), Hindu College (Delhi), Presidency (Chennai), Loyola (Chennai), SRCC (Delhi), LSR (Delhi), Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandira (Howrah) and Madras Christian College.
Management/Medical
IIM-Ahmedabad leads in management, AIIMS-Delhi in medical
In management, the toppers were IIM-Ahmedabad, IIM-Bangalore, IIM-Calcutta and IIM-Lucknow. They were followed by IIT-Bombay, IIM-Kozhikode, IIT-Kharagpur, IIT-Delhi and IIT- Roorkee.
The only non-IIT/non-IIM institute in the list was Xavier Labour Relations Institute, Jharkhand, at the 10th spot.
In medical, AIIMS-Delhi, PGIMER (Chandigarh), Christian Medical College (TN), Kasturba Medical College (Karnataka) and King George`s Medical University (Lucknow) led the list.
Others
The winners in law, architecture and pharmacy
In law, National Law School of India University (Bengaluru), National Law University (Delhi), Nalsar University of Law (Hyderabad), IIT-Kharagpur and National Law University-Jodhpur were ranked the best.
In architecture, IIT-Kharagpur was followed by IIT-Roorkee, School of Planning and Architecture (Delhi), College of Engineering (Trivandrum) and School of Planning and Architecture (Bhopal).
In pharmacy, NIPER (Mohali), Jamia Hamdard (Delhi), Panjab University, ICT-Mumbai and BITS-Pilani led.
